    Can't answer yes or no.:

EBSA stands for Emotionally Based School Avoidance. It's a term used to describe children or young people who experience significant anxiety or emotional distress related to attending school. This often leads to frequent absences, lateness, or complete school refusal.

EBSA isn't a formal diagnosis, but rather a description of behaviours that may be linked to a variety of underlying factors, including:

    • Anxiety disorders (e.g. generalised anxiety, separation anxiety, social anxiety)
    • Autism spectrum conditions
    • Depression
    • Bullying or social difficulties
    • Family issues or trauma

The key feature of EBSA is that the child wants to attend school on some level, but feels unable to due to overwhelming emotional responses.

Support typically involves a collaborative approach between school staff, families, and sometimes external professionals (like Educational Psychologists or CAMHS), focusing on:

    • Building a supportive, understanding school environment
    • Gradual reintegration strategies
    • Addressing the root causes of the anxiety
    • Supporting mental health and well-being

I look forward to reading other contributions, particularly those with the relevant qualifications
